The Benefits of Gardenin for Kids

Apparently, we can see how nature is treated these days. It is a sad thing to know that people do not pay attention so much anymore to the environmental problems. What can we do about this? It's as simple as starting with the children. It is good to see the children's involvement with environment-friendly activities. One such nature-loving activity that children could easily get their hands on is gardening. Why should you consider gardening for your children? Here are the benefits of gardening could easily provide the children with:

1. Science

In planting, children are indirectly taught the wonders of science like the plant's life cycle and how human's intervention can break or make the environment. They can have a first hand experience on the miracle of life through a seed. This would definitely be a new and enjoyable experience for the kids.

2. Life

Watching a seed grow into a tree is just as wondrous as the conception to birth and growth of a child. In time, kids will learn to love their plants and appreciate the life in them. Gardening could actually help simulate how life should be treated -- it should be with care. The necessities to live will be emphasized to kids with the help of gardening - water, sunlight, air, soil. Those necessities could easily be corresponded to human necessities, i.e., water, shelter, air, food. By simply weeding out, one could educate how bad influences should be avoided to be able to live life smoothly.

3. Relaxation

Studies show that gardening can reduce stress because of its calming effect. This is applicable to any age group. More so, it stimulates all the five senses. Believe it or not, gardening may be used as therapy to children who have been abused or those who are members of broken homes. It helps build one's self-esteem.

4. Quality Time with the Family

You can forget about your stressful work life for a while be soothed by the lovely ambience in the garden. You can play and spend quality time with your children. You can talk while watering the plants or you can work quietly beside each other. The bottom line is, always do what you have to do, together with your kids. You might discover a lot of new things about your child while mingling with them in your garden.

Let kids become aware of their environment's needs. And one way to jumpstart that environmental education may be through gardening. It's hitting two birds with one stone - teach them to respect life while you bond with them.

Gardening for Kids

There are several different kinds of gardening; plants, flowers, trees, fruits, herbs and more. Gardening is very important to everyone because everyone needs to eat in order to stay alive. A garden can be any size that you want it to be. You can have a box outside your window with a few plants in them or you can have acres of land as a garden.

Gardening can be done in different seasons, depending on your climate and where you live. Grown ups can grow a garden that will produce fresh vegetables to eat for dinner or to can or preserve so they can be eaten during the winter.

Children need to learn about gardening for several reasons; it can teach them where food can come from, it can teach them how plants grow from seeds to plants that produce, it can also teach them other things like patience as they watch the garden grow.

Gardening also gives the kids a chance to get outdoors and do something that is productive and fun. Allow your child to go with you to buy supplies that are needed for their garden. You may even want to start them out in a pot or a box outside that they can plant a few plants in.

Some of the items you will need to purchase would be soil, seeds, hand held garden tools, a watering can and some fertilizer if needed.

Have your child read the directions on each package and notice how everything is grown differently. For example, cucumbers are barely planted under the ground
while carrots need to be planted deeper. Knowing the depth of each seed will ensure that your child's garden will grow accurately and productive.

Gardening Advice for Kids

Gardening is not only for the adults. Children can have so much fun and benefit from it too. If you want your children to learn the art of gardening, you have to be a good example to them. If you are a good gardener yourself, taking fun and responsibility at what it takes for this activity, it would not be difficult for your children to follow. Gardening is a hobby that can provide lots of benefits both to you and your children. What are the benefits that your children can reap by engaging them into this rewarding hobby? Of course, the first one is the sense of accomplishment they get whenever they see the fruit of their labor. Seeing the fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and beautiful flowers will boost their confidence because of the accomplishment.

But beyond this accomplishment are the values that you instill in them. It is not only the sense of accomplishment but the responsibility they learn to deal with and the rewards after their actions. These are valuable benefits that your children can use as they grow up and have to make social interactions.

When it comes to gardening, you will decide what method is best for them. You can choose whether it will be soil gardening or hydroponics. It doesn't matter what it is since both can give them fun and exciting time as well as productive labor and fruits. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages so you might want to research first which one would be most beneficial to you and to your children.

Having the right tools and supplies will give you both an easy start with this project. Whether it is going to be an indoor or outdoor gardening, you must give the children the freedom to choose their own tools and equipments, with your guidance of course.

These things come in kiddie sizes too, so think of how much it is going to be for them as they get to have their own tools. Also, allow them to pick the type of plants they want to grow. As much as possible, let them pick first the ones that grow easily so teach them of what you know about plants.

At first, it is expected that you will have to do the major gardening work. They are learning so give them the best teaching that you could by setting a very good example in the first few days. Children learn in different ways. There are those who are best in visual learning while others do well in sensory learning. Whatever it is, show them the things that need to be done or let them feel the essence of the plants, soil, and the elements of gardening.

As they take care of their plants, always let them know that you are there to guide them should anything wrong happen or if they have questions regarding gardening activities. It doesn't matter if your children get to have the wackiest plant choices or the most mismatched ones, for as long as they are enjoying and having a sense of pride in this activity, you know that the hobby is giving them benefits and valuable lessons.
