Beautiful Design Your Backyard Around a Fire Pit

Family and friends will gravitate to your backyard when you add a fire pit to your patio. The friendly warmth and glow of a burning fire has been bringing people together for centuries and continues to do so today. You can purchase a fire pit that will go with any backyard design, from basic to sophisticated, and in styles that range from a classic round bowl to tables with fire pits in the center. When it comes to fire pits, there are plenty of choices so which is best for you?

Your first decision will be to have a permanent or portable model. A permanent fire pit is built in and usually burns natural gas from your home. This type often looks more like a fireplace but it makes a statement about your desire to be outdoors in the evening. Portable fire pits dominate the market place, and for the obvious reason - they can be moved. A portable unit allows you to move the fire pit around your backyard or even take it with you to the beach, camping or tailgating. The portable models come in many shapes, materials and sizes so you are sure to find one that will fit the design of your backyard area.

Your second decision will center around the fuel you will use in your fire pit. Wood burning models, continue to be the most popular, but many communities have now placed bans on wood burning so check your local ordinances first. Wood burning fire pits also require more open space around them, so make sure you have an area that is large enough. But for a true campfire experience there is nothing like the smell of burning logs and the crackle of a wood fire. Propane fire pits are becoming more popular every day. They offer easy on and off, leave no ashes to clean up, can be used in more locations and are environmentally friendly. A propane fire pit can easily be designed into a table which makes them even more functional.

Fire pits are a great addition to any backyard and will instantly be the centerpiece of you evening gatherings. Look for a good quality fire pit that is made to last and begin creating new memories for years to come.

Inspirational Outdoor Fire Pit - Don't Embarrass Yourself, or Worse!

Everyone knows how to start a wood fire, don't they? I mean, hasn't "man" instinctively known how to start a fire since the time of Homo erectus, even before mass production of the outdoor fire pit? Actually, starting a wood fire can be tricky, if not embarrassing. Stuffing wads of newspaper underneath a few logs sometimes works. Of course, by the time you've used all your newspaper, created a lot of smoke, dropped a few expletives, and made a big mess, everyone else has taken their marshmallows inside.

There are easier ways to build a safe fire in your outdoor fire pit and impress everyone. The following tips should help:

One

Having purchased a well-made outdoor fire pit, placed it a safe distance from flammable objects, and gathered an ample supply of necessary materials, start by loosely piling dry tinder centered in the bottom of the fire pit.

Tinder can be anything that's dry, brittle or fibrous and burns easily. Its primary function is to ignite the kindling. Dead grass, pine needles, leaves, wood shavings, Pistachio shells, wooden Popsicle sticks and shredded bark are some examples. Make sure tinder is completely free of moisture, or you won't look like you know what you're doing.

Although often overlooked, oxygen is an essential ingredient that must be worked into the mix during every step. Simply pile your tinder loosely, as opposed to jamming those thick wads of newspaper in every crack and crevice.

Two

Using your favorite ignition source, such as a long-stemmed wooden match or long-neck disposable lighter, start a small flame burning in the tinder.

Three

Loosely spread some kindling over the tinder flame. You can smother the flame by adding too much too quickly, so wait until the first pieces catch fire before adding the rest.

Kindling's main purpose is to intensify the flame before adding the larger pieces of firewood, which serve as the fuel.

Thin tree branches, twigs, small sticks, and splintered wood strips are some examples of kindling. As with tinder, kindling must be completely dry with plenty of allowance for oxygen flow as you pile it on. Using tinder and kindling in this way will quickly produce a bright blaze in your outdoor fire pit.

Four

It's time to ignite your fuel when the kindling fire is hot. Taking care to allow free flow of oxygen, stack dry, well-seasoned firewood over the flame. Once ignited, these larger, thicker pieces of wood will help the fire burn longer and hotter.

Stacking your firewood densely may quickly turn your outdoor fire pit cold. Until the firewood is ablaze, use one of several stacking options, such as leaning a couple of pieces of firewood together tepee style.

Start with just one or two pieces of firewood. Aside from the personal safety risks, it's just as embarrassing to have too big of a fire that drives your guests away and burns your house down.

For quick fuel ignition, softwoods are better. Once ignited, however, hardwoods burn hotter and longer, and they're better for heating and cooking. If you have both on hand, use softwood first to build the fire.

Epi-log

Having followed these steps, you can sit around your outdoor fire pit with friends and family, basking in the warmth of your new found mastery. Just wipe the marshmallow goo from your chin.

Beautiful Camp at Home with Your Own Indoor Fire Pit or Fireplace

The best part of summer is camping--escaping out into the great outdoors as temperatures soar, and cooking your dinner on an outdoor fireplace. The worst part of summer camping is, of course, the crowds! With your own outdoor fire pit, however, you can have the best of both worlds and camp out in your own back yard.

There are outdoor fireplaces to suit every price range and style. When deciding which outdoor fire pit to buy, ask yourself a few questions. What is your budget? Who will be using it? How much space do you have? Once you know the answer to these questions, you can start looking around at the different options for your outdoor fireplace, because the last and most important question to answer is, "What style do I like?"

Outdoor Fire Pits and Fire Rings

Fortunately, you have choices. The simplest fire rings start at under a hundred dollars; this style is made from fire-safe materials and usually comes with a simple grill. Some are collapsible for easy transportation. The more decorative the outdoor fire pit, the more it will cost, but your choice really depends on what will fit in your yard, space-wise and style-wise. These smaller outdoor fireplaces are great if you don't have much room or have a small budget.

Outdoor fire pits are larger structures on legs which protect the surface they stand on. Such fire pits act as a focal point and place around which to gather, and while they are a little more expensive than fire rings they do have the advantage of looking more attractive.

When it comes to features, some outdoor fire pits have wheels for easy relocation. Screens are a popular addition; they help prevent accidents and make your outdoor fireplace a great place to enjoy a balmy summer night (or even a mild winter evening). The screens and higher-up flames make such fire pits a little safer, too.

Outdoor Fireplaces are Elegant and Welcoming

The most expensive, but also the most beautiful, outdoor fireplaces can cost thousands of dollars, but they provide a wonderful focal point to an elegant garden. Some outdoor fireplaces even sit at the center of granite tables, making them a welcoming option on colder evenings. They act as showpieces, the heart of a large backyard gather.

If you don't need to cook, an outdoor fireplace is a great addition to your yard. These free-standing structures enclose a warming fire and can be used to provide light, heat and atmosphere year-round. The forms of such outdoor fireplaces range from a pretty pagoda-style to simple cylinders and cubes.

Set up an outdoor fireplace, and you'll have a pleasant, cozy place to welcome your guests for many years to come.

A gas fire pit is just the right way to enjoy a lovely evening in chilly winter evenings. Whether it is your garden, backyard, patio or inside your living room; gas fireplaces have always proved to be much more convenient than your wooden counterparts. Undoubtedly, a wood fireplace has been used through decades and offers quite a traditional look; but times are changing now and most people do not have the time, energy and patience to cut and store wooden logs before lighting a fire. With a Gas Fire Pit you need a gas connection and the knob can simply be turned on whenever you need the warmth of a fireplace.

A gas fire pit is very easy to use and does not dirty the surrounding area in any way. No need to clean up residue and ashes as is the case with wooden fireplaces. But whether you have a gas fireplace or the traditional wooden ones, the need for a chimney liner is always there. Liners act as a protective layer that prevents the chimney from getting damaged fast. When chimneys are not maintained properly they can deteriorate with time and create hazardous conditions for your homes. A deteriorating masonry can allow hazardous gases and toxic fumes to enter the house.

A modern stainless steel Chimney Liner acts as a remedy that provides air tight and water tight barrier that seals in gases and hazardous fumes. Most flexible stainless steel liners are almost the same, and may vary in some instances from manufacturer to manufacturer. The designs and materials used are almost the same, but when installing one, try to get as much information as possible regarding its make so that you do not end up buying the wrong one. A great way to choose chimney liners is to search online where you can get all the specifications you need including the different brands and prices. You can also get a gas fire pit of your choice from the different styles and designs available on online stores.

Elegant Fire Pits in Travel

You know that in the history of mankind, fire is considered as one of the most elemental, fascinating and potent phenomena. Because cooking, warmth, creating ceramics, glass; repelling wild animals, clearing fields for agriculture need fire. On the other hand, it can destroy forests, homes and people.

In today's green-conscious world, safe use of fire in outdoor leisure and travel settings has merited a lot of attention. Misuse of camping fires have caused tragic losses in wildlife, forests, homes and human lives. In some areas, use of open fires is banned completely in recreational areas for fear of wildfires. The use of fire pits can help to make safer use of fire possible. There are two basic types of fire pits - ones that are permanent and sunken into the ground and those that are portable.

The permanent types are great for back yards and patios as property-enhancing features. A pit is dug and lined with heat-retaining stones or bricks which protect the ground below the pit and keep the fire from spreading above ground. The in-place fire pit makes a wonderful focal point for back-yard marshmallow roasts, story-telling, and parties and barbecues. A permanent fire pit can also be piped for natural gas, which gives flexibility in areas where wood burning is prohibited during part of the year.

Portable fire pits can be carried along on family outings and smaller ones can be used virtually anywhere. They burn either wood or charcoal. Most have a metal container of varying shape - round, rectangular or square are most usual - with a screen covering the top to prevent sparks from spreading or flames from escaping. The container is supported by sturdy legs and/or support structures.

Different metals are used. Choices range over shining copper, stainless steel, cast iron and cast aluminum. Some models have wheels on a couple of the legs making it possible to easily relocate. Others are set into a table top and are more furniture-like.

Another type of portable fire pit is the metal or ceramic chiminea. These have a rounded bottom topped by a circular stack of varying height. Wood is put into the bottom through a front opening. Chimineas are a good heat source and small items of food can be cooked over the flames. Many styles are available to match any decor. Family gatherings and outings can be greatly enhanced by the addition of a fire pit.

Beautiful How to Cook with Fire Pits

Fire pits are not merely used to produce warmth but also can be used to cook, keep your dishes warm, roast marshmallows, etc. Along with a fire pit a grate is necessary to cook on your pit.

Fuel also plays an important role in adding extra flavor to your dishes. Wood or charcoal could be the best fuel for using in the firepits as they have the property of adding extra flavor to meat and vegetables which are cooked on it. Barbeques have more advantage and they can easily add a unique flavor when foods are smoked over woodchips. Charcoal is comparatively cheaper with wood and cooks the food including meat and vegetables more quickly than wood. Wood takes more time to cook but it typically what you are burning in your pit anyway so it works just fine.

In addition to charcoal and wood, propane can also be used as fuel in gas fire pits. Propane pits cannot be made by people directly. Propane has little advantage over wood and charcoal, it gets heated up quickly. It is best for grilling and it burns clearer but does not add any flavor to food.

A tripod or rotisserie can be used instead of throwing steak over grill grates. Meats can be cooked more evenly by using a rotisserie while guests relax in the backyard. A chicken or meat made using rotisserie tastes good more than a food cooked over an open flame.

Cooking foods using a firepit grill will be more enjoyable and guests can enjoy the natural environment while tasting the delicious food cooked over an open flame. Carmelization (dark brown or golden crust on meat or chicken) appears on foods that are cooked on fire pit grate that makes the food more appealing and attractive. It also enhances the overall flavor of dish.

Safety comes first when installing or buying a firepit and grill, it is essential to have a fire extinguisher handy. Fire pits can easily fall and hurt people if it is not placed firmly on ground. Also grill and rotisserie equipments must be attached sturdily to hold the food.

By cooking your favorite cuisine you can enjoy the mouthwatering dish with warmth produced by the fire pits on a chill evening.

Awesome Learn to Build a Fire Pit

If summer is leaving and there is a plan in mind for the family, a fire pit is a good idea that gives warmth in a cool evening and marshmallows can also be cooked in the backyard. Fire pits are made to contain fire and prevent it from spreading, it has become so much common readymade ones are now being sold in stores. Conventional fire pits are made from pressed or stainless steel but they are traditionally made from stones, clay or bricks. Traditional fire pits are not very difficult and expensive to build. If extra materials and perfect spot are available for the fire pit, then this article will provide useful tips and guide for building a fire pit.

First, the blueprint of the fire pit design has to be carefully sketched and drawn according to the measurements of the space available. The fire pit must never be built near any trees of building in order to avoid accidents. Look at the size of fire pit that fits into the backyard. A rough estimate about the required materials should be made and the order be placed. Most of the common materials like landscaping blocks, gravel, shovels and barbecue table tops can be purchases from local marts. It has to be made sure that the landscaping blocks have a height of at least 6".

Then, a stake has to be hammered into edges or perimeter and a string is to be looped over the stakes for marking the outline of the fire pit. At least 2 feet of soil has to be dug out and a piece of black plastic has to be placed in followed by 4 inches of sand and gravel each. Now the area has to be leveled and it has to be made sure that it is flat before laying the base blocks. When the first layer of blocks has been laid out, the outside of the blocks have to be covered with gravel to make the fire pit strong. Continue to lay out the other layers of blocks but the diameter of the fire pit would have to be checked after laying every layer for ensuring that the diameter is correct. A steel ring from local garden supply stores need to be bought. This is used to hold the fire pit in place and making sure that it is round.

Now, the blocks have to be cleaned with a brush and few gaps have to be left between blocks in every layer so that the fire can draw air from outside. The steel ring has to be set in place before putting in the steel ring. The firm has to be soaked with water before starting a fire. At least 5 gallons of water and a shovel should be near the fire pit for putting out the stray fires. These were the basic steps for building a fire pit.
