Best of Water in Your Japanese Garden

To Pond or not.

Perhaps one of the most expected features in any Japanese garden is the pond. Do you want water in your Japanese garden? Yes, of course you do!

If there is any way that you have the space and resources , a pond is just about the best thing you can incorporate into your garden. It doesn't have to be big. But it should be suited to your garden. There is just something, well, so relaxing about a water feature.

There are several things to consider before deciding on a pond. Firstly, it is work to put one in. Digging out for a pond of any size is an effort. If you have the facility to bring in a small backhoe to do the job, then that part will be easy. If not, be prepared for some hard work. Do you know what kind of ground you have? Is it decent soil or is it full of rocks? And do you have a place to put all that extra dirt? It always amazes me that when you dig out one cubic yard of soil that it takes up twice as much space when you move it!

What will the pond be used for? Will you try to keep fish in it? Water plants maybe? How will it be lined? Will there need to be some sort of aeration if you have fish? Make sure you have all the bases covered before you start.

Both fish and water lilies need a water depth of about two feet. It could be a little deeper for larger fish. That means you will need to dig the hole about 2 1/2 feet deep to provide adequate water depth.

I still remember my first pond 35 years ago. All dug by hand and lined with concrete. Oh, what a job!

My current pond, being done as we speak, has one of these modern liners. Much easier to put in, and far less costly in the long run. It also has a small header pond with short connecting stream.

It does take considerable care for the installation of a pond liner. The one thing that a liner is susceptible to is being punctured by sharp objects. You need to make sure that the whole area covered by the pond has all the rocks, both large and small meticulously removed. You will benefit from using something between the ground and your liner. There are special sub liners available which you can lay down first, although this will essentially double the cost of your liner.

I am using a combination of sawdust (I do a LOT of woodworking) and carpet for my underliner. Now I know the liner salesman will tell you that this will not work and that it will smell. But a recent visit to a friend on a neighboring island here would tend to say otherwise. Ray has had his pond in place for several years without any ill effects from the carpet.

Aside from the initial work of installation, your pond will require minimal maintenance. No more than any other part of your garden.

Luxury Quick Guide to Water Gardening

If you are thinking of enhancing your landscape options and increasing the esthetic appeal of your home, you must consider a water feature. For the home gardener, water features can be both exciting and rewarding. What other aspect of you landscape can add the relaxing sound of moving water, allow you to use new and different plants, and attract animals and birds into your yard?

There are four different types of water features you may want to consider when thinking about your water garden. These are ponds, streams, waterfalls and fountains.

Ponds can be divided into two different types: formal and informal.

Formal ponds, often called pools, are characterized by neat regular borders. They may have an edge that is circular or straight in nature. Pools can be raised or at ground level and have a formal man made look.
An informal pond looks as if it was designed by nature. The only limit for designing and informal pond is your imagination. Your pond may look like a secluded mountain treasure, a secret desert oasis, a charming oriental garden, or what ever else comes to mind: it' is your choice. The edges of an informal pond are at ground level and are camouflaged with rocks, stones and plants. Your pond can be small or large; whatever your space limitations are. When considering an informal pond you may want the flexibility and convenience of a pond kit. Pond kits contain everything you need but the stone, water, and plants, and are just the ticket for the beginner.

Streams are generally used as a connecting waterway between two features; usually a waterfall and pond. Streams may be either fast moving or slow, and the natural features of your yard will in part determine your stream choice. A stream will require a pump to move the water from the pond back up to the waterfall. Erosion, seasonal runoff, and silt deposits are a few of the special considerations one should plan for when thinking of a stream.

Waterfalls may either be a water feature that empties into a pond or stream or a disappearing waterfall. A disappearing waterfall is just that: the water disappears into the ground, is then collected in an underground basin, and is pumped back up to the waterfall. Usually the water basin is covered with rock or stone for a natural transition. The advantages of a disappearing waterfall is that it does not have to run constantly, there is no visible, standing water and it does not require a lot of space. When building any waterfall your top priority is making sure that it is waterproof. A disappearing waterfall kit will help insure your success and make your project the perfect addition to your landscape.

Fountains can come in just about any size, shape, or form. They may be free standing or be included within a pond. If you are considering a pond with fish or plants, a fountain is an excellent way of aerating the water by providing a continuous source of oxygen. Fountains may act as a sound barrier, and as with any water feature the sound and movement of the water will enable you to relax and enjoy a bit of nature.

Make your yard a home within your home by adding a water feature that brings you years of pleasure and enjoyment.

Elegant Water Fountains for the Business Place

Visitors and employees alike need a stress relieving atmosphere from the everyday rush of the business life. Jobs can be so stressful these days; the coming and going all day, or sitting behind a desk all day.  Jobs consists of a large portion of our day and week so why not make the best of it.  Make it as comfortable and calming as possible with a small water fountain in the office or large water fountain in the entrance area.

Create a calming atmosphere in your place of business.  A garden fountain can be placed outside on the patio at the lunch break area, a wall fountain in the hallways of your business offices, or on the walls or floor of your lobby. This way everyone arriving at your business can relax as they enter and develop an instant sense of well-being upon visiting you, or in beginning another work day. A handsome garden fountain at the entrance is the calming effect for everyone that enters and the stress relieving atmosphere needed upon leaving.

We often overburden ourselves with the busy demands of the everyday busy life. We are losing sleep at night and losing touch with the sense of well being that we thought was going to automatically stay with us.

Architects have been incorporating water fountains into their plans for office buildings for many years. Placing a water fountain at the business site creates:

A need to slow down and reevaluate priorities of the day.
The willpower to think twice about sacrificing your much needed stress relief today.
An easier, more natural balance of duties throughout the day. (Life in general, gets out of balance very quickly so we need to take measures in keeping that much needed balance.)
A calming air of improved communication between employees and customers.
Lifted spirits when seeing this visually pleasing sight whether it be indoors or out.
The calming visual effect that helps facilitates clear thinking and organization of thoughts.
Motivation to calmly deal with the happening of the day.

An architect once said that a beautiful garden fountain in a landscape of colorful flowers and greenery at the entrance of the workplace symbolizes constancy and truth under difficult circumstances of the day.

What motivates us and helps us through the hectic rush of the everyday busy life? That Water Fountain can.

Unique Koi Filter - Keeping Your Pond Water Clean

For a fish hobbyist, one of the most important pieces of equipment to have is a water filter. It's only natural that since your Koi will be living in your garden pond permanently (unless you sell them), you should go to all lengths to keep the water as clean and as debris-free as possible. In fact, it's even more important for a pond to have a properly-sized Koi filter because it's located outdoors.

Unfiltered Koi water will attain high concentrations of ammonia (excreted by the fish) and will turn green and foul-smelling before you know it. Toxic nitrates will build up and all sorts of foreign matter will find themselves on the pond surface over a short period of time - dead insects, sticks and leaves, uneaten fish food and other debris.

There are two components to Koi filters - mechanical filtration, which removes pollutants and debris physically, and the biological filter which converts ammonia and nitrates into less toxic substances. Both these stages help make life more comfortable and less stressful for your expensive pets. Remember that a happy Koi makes for a healthy Koi.

In mechanical filtration, dirt and other foreign matter is filtered with the use of pads, sand or beads which trap the pollutants so they can be taken out of the water easily. Water is sucked through the filters with the use of a pump. The pump's capacity to process water has a lot to do in how effective it will be. Experts say a water pump has to be able to handle at least 1/3 of the Koi pond's total capacity randomly. There are two kinds of pumps for Koi ponds, submersible pumps and re-circulating pumps. The latter are more effective for large ponds because of their durability and power although they can be quite noisy.

The cleaning process that happens in biological filtration is a bit more complicated. Noxious elements that have formed from pollutant and excretions from the fish like ammonia are acted on by bacteria which transform it into nitrates. Nitrates are still toxic to the fish, but anaerobic bacteria, again through the same process of biological filtration, convert them into nitrites which are not as dangerous to the Koi.

To make sure your fish are swimming in really safe waters, a drainage hole in should be built in the lowest part of the pond. Here, dirt can be sucked-out by the pump and trapped in the filter chambers. This along with an adequate aerator can be the perfect accompaniment to your Koi filter, making the water in your garden pond a clean and hazard-free habitat in which you can enjoy and take care of your fish for many years to come.

Beautiful Feng Shui and Water Fountains

Feng Shui as we all know is the ancient Chinese art that places importance on the placement of objects in the right place, to facilitate mental and physical well being. This ancient art bases its theory on the five elements of nature, fire, earth, water, wood, and metal. A harmonious lifestyle is a result of the presence of these elements in the appropriate place and in the appropriate proportion.

The art primarily focuses on 'chi' or energy. A balance of this 'chi' brings harmony around you and thus helps you in everything, right from strengthening relationships to even encouraging prosperity. Water as earlier said, is one of the five main elements in Feng Shui. Water can be in the form of a pond, water fountains etc. These also can be used to fill the imbalances in the construction of a room. Feng Shui believes that the flow of water inside the house brings money and prosperity to your home.

Water fountains, according to Feng Shui, help to refresh and circulate Chi. For those looking for help to find the right fountains, with Feng Shui in mind can either refer to an expert for help or can also refer the internet, where there are several websites that focus on feng shui fountains.

The sound of water gently cascading down the stream, manages to calm frayed nerves, thus pushing negativity aside.

When shopping for indoor fountains, with Feng Shui in mind, remember to find one that balances out the energy in the room. For example a water fountain with cool colors can balance out the warm colors of your room. A slate water fountain can even out the ceramic tiles in your bathroom. A room with too many straight lines could do with a water fountain, for their curvy lines. Rather than the décor, it's important to pay attention to ones that would harmonize the energy inside the house.

There are a number of options for those looking for feng shui fountains based on the principle. You could either choose from indoor fountains that are made from materials like bamboo, ceramic, stainless steel, and even glass. There are also water fountains that incorporate all the five elements within them. You could also opt for flower vases that tie the elements and double up as a fountain. Choices for those looking for the perfect fountain are aplenty. If you like to shop online you will find the most selection as stores simply can not carry all of the options that are out there.

New Get That Water Circulating in Your Garden Koi Pond

How to Maximize Your Garden Koi Pond Turnover Rate

Simply put, the turnover rate of your pond is how fast it takes for all the water in it to go through the pond filter. It varies from pond to pond.

Ready...Set...Calculate!

This should excite you math-whizzes out there. To find out what your Koi pond's turnover rate is, simply calculate how much water your pump moves per day and divide it by the volume of your pond.

So, for instance, if you have a 50,000 liter pond and a pump that moves X liters of water per hour, it would be pumping (X*24) liters per day. Take that number and divide it by 50,000 liters and you have your turnover rate.

The turnover rate determines the average ammonia concentration in your garden Koi pond water. That's how much ammonia is left in the water after filtration. This will vary depending how often the pond water is turned over.

Why does turnover rate matter?

High turnover rates ensure high oxygen levels in the pond. You need oxygen in the water because Koi need oxygen, the plants need oxygen, and the microorganisms in the water need oxygen to live. Because of this, oxygen levels in the water tend to fluctuate depending on many factors including time of day, number of fish, number of plants, etc.

On the reverse side, low oxygen levels can spell disaster. So keep your eye on the oxygen.

Turnover Rate and Bio filters

Knowing your garden Koi pond turnover rate is also important when shopping for a bio filter. Keep in mind that a filter chamber can handle only so much. It does not have a limitless capacity. Additionally, your pond's flow rate will affect the water's residence time in the bio filter.

Residence Time?

Just like how it sounds, residence time is the maximum amount of time the pond water is in the bio filter, in contact with the bio media.

For instance, if the residence time of the filter chamber is 2 minutes, that means it takes the bio film and active bacteria in the filter 2 minutes to convert the harmful ammonia in your garden Koi pond (from the Koi feces) into nitrites and then to nitrates.

You don't really need a chemistry degree to understand this - well, on second thought, maybe you do. Point is you don't want ammonia. Ammonia makes the Koi sick. The bio filter oxidizes it and converts it to something safer for the fish.

We could go into the theories and discussions involving how these hardworking little buggers do their work, but we won't. We'll just take a moment to thank them right now....

OK.

The bottom line with bio filters is you can't have too much of it protecting your garden Koi pond keeping the water clean and healthy for you fish. Having said that, there is no reason to get all excited and begin messing around with the flow rates to try to maximize contact time with the bio filter. Leave that alone.

If turnover rate slows down, you could put your bio filter into ammonia overload. You don't want that, trust me. If your bio filter is not able to oxidize all the ammonia on the first pass, it has another opportunity the next time around providing your turnover rate is decent.

If you have a new garden Koi pond, keep in mind that it takes time to get a new bio filter to grow bio film. It took you 9 months from conception to birth (10, really) so don't rush nature. Give the little guys a chance to get going.

Let the pond find its own "happy place" or equilibrium. Don't over-feed the Koi. The more you feed, the more they excrete; and with an immature bio filter, this can lead to problems.

Keep an eye on the ammonia and nitrite levels and just let nature run its course.

Oh, alright, I'll tell you how to cheat nature. Get some Bao Bio Clear - that'll jump start the bio film growth.

Elegant Feng Shui Life with Water Fountains for Greater Wealth

Placing a feng shui water fountain in the Wealth area of your home is one of the most effective cures to attract more money into your feng shui life. Before you do so, determine where the wealth area in your home or office is with the use of the bagua. As a tip, this area is usually located in the far left section of your space. This is considered a “power corner” and is usually located farthest from the entry way.

Once you have determined where your wealth area is, place the feng shui water fountain cure in this place and strengthen its effectiveness by creating a clear vision in your mind that wealth is flowing abundantly in your new feng shui life.

Water fountains are effective regardless of size, but in this case, larger can sometimes be better. Fountains for the home are also easy to find in any home decorating store, hardware store, department stores and on-line. You can also create your own wealth fountain by using a big ceramic pot, a small aquarium pump and some smooth stones and crystals.

It is also important to make sure that the water in your wealth fountain is clean at all times. This will reflect how clean and steady the flow of your financial feng shui life will be, constant and never slowing. Skipping regular water maintenance will cause a stoppage in the flow of wealth and energy will be stagnant so make sure to keep it well looked after, just like your money is.

Keep in mind however, that this cure is only as good as you intend it to be. Make sure that you have a clear picture of your intention in mind as you place this water cure. Take a moment to breath, and exhale as if you’re releasing all the negative energy in your mind and body. Focus your energy on the image of what you want to achieve. Do this as you hold the feng shui water fountain in your hands, as if it contains your dreams of wealth and prosperity. If you take time to do this, you will see tremendous results pouring into your prosperous and abundant feng shui life.

Also, make sure that the area where you intend to place your wealth fountain is clean and free from clutter. Any damaged or broken items should either be repaired or discarded. Wealth energy will flow so much better in a free space. Remember that this space is sacred and needs to be kept that way. Release stagnant energy by ringing bells or banging cooking pots together. You can also burn sage to purify and cleanse this area. If you do this, make sure that a door or window is open so that the negative energy escapes.

When choosing water fountains, make sure that it suits the style of your home decor, is proportionate to the size of the space that you are placing it in, and incorporates a nice blend of element-symbolizing materials that represent what you want to add in that space.

Experiment with the speed and sound of the flow until you find one that complements you. When placing a feng shui water fountain by a door, make sure that the water flows towards your door and not away from it. This will ensure that good chi will always flow into your home and not out of it, creating a very wealthy and healthy feng shui life for you.

Inspirational Choosing the Right Water Bottle Bird House Design

People have birds coming into their lives in many different ways. Some buy them from a store and keep them in a cage in their homes, letting them out to fly around from time to time as well.

Other people attract wild birds into their backyards and enjoy seeing them in their natural habitat. Provided you or your neighbor doesn't have cats, the birds should come quite easily if you have the right items in your garden to attract them.

We all know that providing food for the birds is very important. But one of the most vital things you can provide for them is water too. Water bottle bird house items are freely available at many good pet stores; all you need to decide is what style and size you would like to get for them.

Inside or Outside?

A water bottle bird house design is easy to find for an indoors cage since they are designed to be attached to the bars. All you need to do is buy the water bottle, bird house and any other items you need and fix the water bottle bird house combination together.

Outdoors is a little trickier. You cannot really buy a water bottle; bird house styles they fit to are intended for indoors only so you might be better off buying a bird table that can either be filled naturally with rainwater or which you can top off yourself during warmer and drier weather when it may run dry.

However water bottles are more hygienic so you may be able to provide a floor standing bird table on which you can attach it in some way. Bear in mind that the birds will need to be able to stand on the table and take water from the bottle when it is fixed slightly above them. You could stand the table next to a wall and attach the bottle to some guttering perhaps; try some different solutions to see what works best for you.

When you have fixed a water bottle/bird house solution together, try watching the birds for a few days to see how they cope with it. If it doesn't seem to be working, try something else until you arrive at the perfect solution. Eventually the birds coming into your garden will know that they have a source of food and water they can rely on all year round - and you will be able to see them enjoying it from the comfort of your own home.

Awesome the Calming Effect of Wall Water Fountains

Stress is a major factor in seemingly every person's life these days, and in the average person's free time, limiting and relieving that stress is a pretty high priority. This is a main reason why so many people invest a lot of time, money and effort into making their homes into a relaxing place that they enjoy spending time at. Part of these resources often go into finding just the right items to really increase the benefits of hanging out around the use- items like wall water fountains, which can provide a calming effect almost instantly on people who are in their vicinity.

Why Wall Water Fountains?

Why do so many people choose wall water fountains? It is hard to generalize all of these motivations of so many different people into one common theme, but the relaxing effect has to be pretty high up on the list. Because of the gentle trickling sounds that emit from such fountains, the fountain itself becomes sort of a soundtrack for the moments that you spend doing whatever you like: reading, spending time with loved ones, or just enjoying some peace and quiet.

The Natural Properties of Wall Water Fountains

Of course, there is also a less tangible effect that comes from having a wall water fountain in your office, living room, or other area in your home. This comes from the tie you feel to nature when being around such a vibrant, necessary part of life: water. It does not take a psychologist to understand that in today's world of cell phones, e-mail and electronics, being close to something as natural and organic as moving water simply feels "right". It helps to refresh people and remind them of the essence of life itself- which is, of course, water.

Exploring the Logistics of Indoor and Outdoor Fountains

Many wall water fountains are smaller and designed for indoor use. Of course, there are also waterfall style fountains that can be quite large and really attract attention in even an expansive outdoor area, too. Many of the details of each type of fountain are quite similar. For instance, you want to use distilled water for indoor and outdoor fountains whenever possible (to avoid mineral build-up), you need to stick to recommended cleaning schedules (every month or so for outdoor fountains, every several months for indoor ones), and so on. The key here is that you can enjoy many fountains inside the home, which allows you to really bring your love of the outdoors inside with you.

It is really hard to put a price tag or numerical value on something as precious as relaxation. The more busy we get, the more important it becomes to take time for one's self now and then, even if it just means to take a few moments and not do much of anything! If you find, as many have, that wall water fountains have a calming effect on you, you will certainly not regret investing in one.

Inspirational European Influences on Water Fountain Development

In previous articles I've covered the Ancient Roman, Middle-Eastern, and Chinese contributions to water fountain use, design and technology. This article covers some of the European adaptations. The trade routes between countries and cultures in the known world allowed for the advancement of the use of water, practical and aesthetic, and for the technology that allowed advancement. As each region/ culture encountered new water fountain technology, it incorporated and adopted methods that reflected local resources, values and aesthetics. These different perspectives were, in turn, exported out of the area to re-influence new ideas and adaptations.

The European concept of water use was born in ancient Rome during the Imperial period. Villas of the wealthy prominently featured water displays that ranged from still-water reflecting pools to hydraulically-powered jet fountains. As the Roman political influence waned, its aesthetic approaches to the use of water remained. Technology and its application to water use within different cultures advanced and was shared or copied over the centuries, so that by 1500 AD the European aesthetic and practice of water fountain technology had developed to the point of a unique expression. Playfulness.

This all seemed to come together at the Versailles Chateau where, at the peak of its water fountain use, over 1400 fountains were operating within the expansive grounds. The back story as to how this came about is fascinating and grist for a different article, but for now - decades of labor at a cost of millions of lives, and staggering amounts of money went into converting what had been a relatively dry area into a water-fed playground for royalty. Much of that grandeur remains today, and the existing water fountains created by artists of that period remain as impressive multi-spouted works of art and engineering. At one point, before full completion of the water supply lines, guests at the Chateau were limited to one bowl of water daily for personal use, while the water features went through more water each day than did the entire city of Paris! Such was the priority of water use.

Middle Eastern water robotics which were both artistic in design, and practical in application, were adapted to the European mind-set, and the outcome was water powered robotics designed purely for human amusement. This peaked throughout Europe in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Hydraulically powered figures and trick fountains were the rage of the wealthy. Entire miniature villages, its inhabitants carrying on their routine chores, were created for the pleasure of wealthy aristocrats. Trick fountains were set up to soak unsuspecting guests who, when seated, would trigger a water jet in the seat of the chair or bench, or when stepping on a stair or floor tile or walking through a gate would trigger a similar drenching experience.

There are precious few of these playful displays still to be found today. A sixteenth century English tree fountain, randomly spouting water, is still functioning and popular, and there are other scattered examples that remain as mere shadows of the original displays. However, the best preserved fully functional display remains intact at the Hellbrunn Palace near Salzburg, Austria. If you find yourself anywhere near that part of the world, it is worth a stop to experience a water display pretty much the as it amazed and amused guests in the 1700's.

This playful use of water is reflected in the designs of many contemporary water fountains -- from the complex computer-controlled Appearing Rooms Fountain that creates walls of water allowing an interactive walk-thru and that change randomly, to the small, personal indoor water fountains in homes that feature urinating children, a classic Italian design, to spouting frogs. As you choose your own indoor or garden water fountain today, you have a wide variety of designs, materials and presentations that are the culmination of influences traded and improved upon over more than two thousand years.
