They may even be making it up because every year you may do the same thing and every year each family in your neighborhood may be aggravated with you for treating the holidays as if it were some type of competition.
During the holiday season it's the time to be with family and friends, and it would not be the time of year to see who has the best window decoration. At that point, you're just turning every ones tradition into a competition and that may not be what most people are looking for in their neighbors.
